How to shop for Used Hearing Aids

There is a prevailing debate on whether or not it is advisable, or at the very least, ok to use used hearing aids. There are several people who claims to buy have bought used hearing aids on the internet or handed down to them from other people.

I personally think there are several things to consider before anyone entertains the thought of getting a used hearing aid.

Does it fit?

A hearing aid may be custom-made or behind the ear. Obviously, the custom-made ones were done with the specifications of the user – inner and outer ear. There is a very slim chance that this used hearing aid will fit anyone else. Forcing this kind might even further damage your ear not to mention it will be uncomfortable.

Behind the ear hearing aids are more versatile. Most of the time, all you will need is a new earmold or ear tip. This style may be worn by other people provided the hearing aid is what your kind of hearing loss needs.

Enter prescription

You definitely need a professional. You can’t get away with a professional. Only they will determine what kind of hearing loss you have and what kind of hearing aid you need. The professional will also be the one to look into the prescription of the hearing aids and determine if the amplification and if there are adjustments needed.

You need to have the used hearing aid tested too by an audiologist just to make sure that it is in working condition lest you make your condition worse. You have to make sure that it is thoroughly cleaned too. You will still spend on these. So make sure that you are not spending more in having the used hearing aid maintained than buying a new one.

Think Of Others

If you are the one getting rid of a hearing aid, it is not a bad idea to look for organizations that take used hearing aids to give it away to others who might need it but does not have the money to buy one. It’s just a little extra thing you can do that will certain help other people.
